The Motherfucker with the hat

by Stephen Aidly Gurguis

Motherfucker is an easy show to take for an arguing match, fueled by anger, hate, and drugs; at least that’s how I read it the first time. The truth of the play unfolded for me when I realized it was really a story about how there isn't always something we can do given our circumstances; a story that shows that community is the tie that binds us, and what it looks like to love in spite of. The Motherfucker with the Hat is a call to communal action as much as it is reflection as much as it is a fond memory as much as it could be the future.

I knew I loved this play, but I wasn’t always certain why I wanted to do it. Working in and creating new community to make this show possible, and being allowed a space to try freely and imperfectly showed me that I wanted to put this show on to remind folks that: forgiveness doesn’t have to be earned, there’s not always someone to blame, we can all stretch a little farther to give a hand to our neighbor, and oftentimes loving is the bravest thing you can do.

The long christmas ride home

by Paula Vogel

My favorite quote from this play is "moments linked to moments" because once I sifted past the dense language, complicated relationships, and intricate puppetry work I realized that is the through-line of this piece, and the journey of these characters.  Vogel wrote a compelling story that shows how the past echos into our future until we ring out a new call, if we can, and the consequences of allowing your experiences and memories to keep your life on a loop.
